The seasonal opening of beluga harvesting in the Hudson Strait is coming soon. As of November 1st, the local LNUK may announce the re-opening of hunting. For clarity, DFO is responsible for announcing the seasonal closure on September 1st, but the re-opening is to be decided and announced by the local LNUKs on or after November 1st. This can be decided locally.

The intention is for local decision-makers to allow the EHB belugas and early migrations to pass by, before opening for harvest from the larger WHB beluga migration. Local LNUKs are best positioned to know when hunting should occur to balance the needs of the community with the conservation efforts of the EHB beluga for future generations to hunt.
