2025 Fall Beluga Harvest Considerations
Considerations
Aerial surveys show that East Hudson Bay Beluga numbers are declining. Each year, Fall harvests in Hudson Strait and Northeast Hudson Bay regions (Puvirnituq, Akulivik, Ivujivik, Salluit, Kangiqsuaq, and Quaqtaq) record the greatest harvest mortality impact on the threatened East Hudson Bay (EHB) beluga while accounting for relatively less of the total annual beluga harvest.

Science and Inuit knowledge both indicate that the chances of harvesting EHB beluga in hudson strait declines throughout November.
- If all harvesting occurred in the first 10 days of November when 1 out of 2 beluga harvested are EHB, then the maximum recommended beluga harvest in Hudson Strait is about 50.
- If all harvesting occurred in the last 10 days of November when 1 out of 10 beluga harvested are EHB, then the maximum recommended beluga harvest in Hudson Strait is about 250.
We are not directing or even recommending that all harvest occur in late November. But, to ensure the protection of EHB we encourage harvesters to shift to later in November when it is safe to do so. We also encourage Anguvigait in the Hudson Strait communities delay opening the fall hunt until after your local knowledge holders and Elders have indicated that the early-migrating beluga have moved past.

Anguvigait have the authority to develop Local Management and Hunt Plans for their community We are also encouraging Anguvigait to develop Local Management Plans for their community that include:
1- Best Practices
2- Advice and regulations for visiting hunters
3- Local limits
4- Strategies for avoiding harvest of East Hudson Bay beluga
